I noticed that some of my Instagram followers are using the screen capture option to copy the picture collage of Lucille Ball's spider faces.
Here's the original full-sized version, and as promised, I didn't put any watermark, feel free to grab it and use it in any way you wish!
Lucille Ball created this spider face and the "eugh"voice to go along with it while doing her immensely popular weekly radio show, My Favorite Husband.
The advertisement segments required Lucy to be Lucille Ball and not Liz.
"Give her a script and she will give you 200% of returns, but ask her to be herself and she will freeze up."
Lucille didn't feel at all comfortable being herself because she felt that she wasn't funny in real life. Her longtime secretary, Wanda Clark, disagreed and said that she had a great sense of humor, not the slapstick, physical comedy kind, but rather verbally... but that's a story for another day. Anyway, trying to be herself in the commercial segments was a torture for her. The head writer, Jess Oppenheimer saw how pained she was and decided to give her some "roles" to assume. She assume roles in Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Jack Sprat, Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet, the Spider, and so forth.
As you can guess, the audience loved it. Everyone was always roaring with laughter! One particularly funny expression and voice that was the spider face and the "eugh" sound. And so, that was how this spider face was born!
