I wish to inform you that I have deleted my instagram account. Months and months of seeking rare photos of Lucy, colorizing them have all been deleted.

It's all thanks to one "fan". Nah. I'm just sick and tired of dealing with people.

Desi Arnaz: Sweet Husband

"Desi was very interested in photography. He was also a sentimental man who liked to chronicle his life with Lucy. (...) She (Lucy) once told me that he has hundreds of albums with pictures of her. I thought she was exaggerating. She was not."

I wish more home videos and personal pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Desi Arnaz can be released, but it would be asking for too much, wouldn't it? It's just that it warms me up when I see them together.

I Love Lucy: Rare Picture of Cast

Here's an extremely rare color picture of the I Love Lucy cast after a scene.

 

 

I'll like to clarify once again that the dislike that William Frawley and Vivian Vance had for each other was exaggerated. Please remember that it was the period where the whole world loved this television program. Everyone bought merchandise that would remind them of I Love Lucy. It's like the Titanic craze, remember? Everyone bought t-shits, key chains, notepads, erasers-- anything that would remind them of the (awesome) movie.

Of course people would exaggerate things.

It's known to many that Vivian Vance indeed said "champagne for all!" in a club upon hearing the passing of Bill Frawley. However, the publicity people conveniently left out the second part, "it's a pity that (...) the world lost a deeply humorous... and talented man."

Vivian just didn't want to be romantically linked with an unattractive older man on television. Bill was at the age where he had lost his charm and former suaveness, so he got offended. So, Viv would be sarcastic to him, Bill would play childish tricks on her. And Desi and Lucille and the I Love Lucy family would roll their eyes. That's all.

Best Foot Forward

Here's a photo request from one of my Instagram followers. Sorry for posting it up late.

This is actually a screenshot from one of her movie musicals, Best Foot Forward. She was playing the piano and singing. Actually, someone was doing the singing for her.

I often wonder why the movie producers, Desi, and even Lucille herself thought that she couldn't sing. She wasn't the Judy Garland standard, but she was certainly above average! Have you heard her on Dance, Girl, Dance? She was all right there!

Anyway, unlike Lucy Ricardo who lacked talent, Lucy Ball could play the piano. At home, she often played the piano for Desi while he sang and rehearsed for his band performances. Desi even bought her an organ after the birth of little Lucie.

I Love Lucy: Playing Scrabble

Desi and Lucille retained that innocence when couples just started dating who were hopelessly smitten with each other. That would be the period where they would find anything amusing.

If you have watched the documentary Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie, you'll see clips of them acting childlike and silly when they were first married. They dressed in costumes, partied, teased and horse played, took adorable pictures and videos of each other, and thoroughly enjoyed the company of each other. I suppose that they were able to throw away their adult problems momentarily and return to the carefree childhood. Too bad they became the main source of unhappiness for each other 2 decades later and had to separate. People change; external circumstances never stay the same. However, Desi and Lucille loved each other in spite of all the mistakes... till the very end.

That magic between these two is the ingredient that makes I Love Lucy so successful.

Too Many Girls (1940)

Do you know? Lucille Ball was actually quite reluctant in doing the movie, Too Many Girls.

First of all, she felt that she was too old to play a role of a co-ed. She was in her late twenties that time. She didn't want to be criticized by anyone, especially her fans.

Second of all, she was also making a movie, Dance, Girl, Dance, where she was a sexy and rowdy burlesque queen. She was afraid that she could not "get into" the role and be convincing.

She couldn't have been more wrong: Lucille looked wonderful and young and fresh in the movie! She was also wonderful in her acting. I always have problems linking the movie "Lucy" with the television "Lucy", and even for each movie that she has made, she was different. This is a rare quality that most actors do not have. Lucille was certainly versatile.

I think that we take it for granted when we study history. What makes history so fascinating to me is that I keep reminding myself that the characters that we are studying have no idea what the next moment would be. We know it not because we're clairvoyant, but because we're looking back into the past. I just feel that timing is really important. Lucille was in RKO at that time, and RKO was milking her "never say no to movies" attitude. She was easygoing and amazingly agreeable back then because she would never say no to any opportunity for learning. Because of her circumstances at that time, she met another actor in the movie, fell in love with him, eloped with him, made I Love Lucy, became the first pregnant woman on television, America's favorite redhead and queen of comedy.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's Divorce

The infamous divorce had left Lucille Ball vulnerable. It was, in my opinion, the most important event that explained why she became embittered thereafter. She was devastated that she had disappointed millions of I Love Lucy fans and was terrified to know if any of them blamed her. She also guarded against reporters and other media members who might want to dig out dirt about her failed marriage. Mostly, she didn't want Desi to be hurt, but as a perfectionist, she didn't want to come to terms with her failure, and she was publicly humiliated. Lucille never got over the great love story. It was hard on her because she loved acting and in order to continue doing so, she had to stay in Hollywood, where all the painful memories and vicious traps existed. She really had a love-hate relationship with Hollywood.

She assumed an aloof, cold and arrogant persona when being interviewed, and in her professional and private life, she was unforgiving, harsh, and her heart basically closed. Fans who are intimate with Lucy Ricardo will definitely be shocked: the just cannot connect that zany, lovable character with the other Lucille Ball that appeared on talk shows. That just shows you how damn talented she was as an actress because in actual fact, even though young Lucille was not either extreme, she certainly was a "hard-bitten show girl", who was warm and sweet to a specially selected few. Lucille didn't do that physical comedy act in real life (but she certainly had a great sense of humor). That was why Desi didn't want her to appear on talk shows; he knew that the audience would be shocked.

However, people should give her true character some credit. Lucille could display spontaneous humor if she wanted to! The fact that she was so humble and self-effacing and kept claiming that "I'm not funny, what I am is brave" created a self-fulfilling prophecy and she (and others) ultimately believed that she was void of humor. Watch candid videos of her, you'd be surprised that she would occasionally throw hilarious comments every now and then.

She really had no idea how much she was loved. Her fans loved her just as much, and more surprisingly, you'd realize from viewing YouTube videos of interviews with the post-divorce Miss Ball that everyone regarded her with such high esteem that even the most vicious talk show host would be careful in skirting this topic.

She must have intimidated her family and friends a lot, because no one managed to open up her heart again. I'd like to think that she finally did, 2 days before Desi's death, because she told him "I love you. I love you, Desi. I love you," over and over again as she wept. It was the saddest but most beautiful moment, sad that the two people who were meant to love each other were about to be separated by life and death, beautiful that she finally made the leap to express her love openly. Lucille really had an astounding capability to love, and this is evident if you would study pictures and videos of her, and come on, she endured a marriage full of alcohol and whores because she loved Desi so much, didn't she, but this capability for love was buried deep in her.

I really love her.

Keith Thibodeaux and Desi Arnaz Jr

Hey guys! Thank you for leaving me those wonderful comments. Well, I miss you all too! And I'm deeply honored and humbled that what I've been doing to this blog has received compliments. I love Lucy, and I'm sorry for not posting. Here's one.

A lot of people believe that Ricky Ricardo Jr. was Desi and Lucille's real son. They couldn't be more wrong.

The role of Little Ricky was played by a talented young drummer called Keith Thibodeaux. He displayed such great skills with the drums that he was hired by Desi Arnaz immediately. Lucille took care of his wardrobe, his hair, and even his education. Keith stayed over at the Arnaz's place often and was a playmate to Desi Jr. and little Lucie.

"It was like having three children instead of two," said the couple.

Of course, that meant that young Keith had witnessed Desi and Lucille's explosive tempers and raging quarrels many times.

Having Little Ricky on television was kinda tough for Desi Jr., it caused him to have identity problems. When he was young, strangers would walk up to him and say things like, "hey, you're Little Ricky!" or "hey, you don't look like Little Ricky!" It was tiring to have to try to explain to people that he wasn't little Ricky, but Desi Jr.. They wouldn't have gotten it. Bear in mind that back then, communication methods were tough. There wasn't television reruns, not many books were written about the legendary couple, DVDs and documentaries didn't exist, and there wasn't internet. Television audience "invited" the Ricardos and Mertzes into their living room once a week, and they were like family. Telling them that Little Ricky wasn't Desi Jr. wouldn't have gotten anywhere because they were too used to having another concept.

I'm glad that Desi has straighten out his life and is living meaningfully and happily with his family.His parents would be so proud of him.

Desi's Death Anniversary, 2 December

Reasons to love Desi Arnaz:

1.  Lucille trusted no one but him. Even after divorce, she still did. That really says something about his love for her.

2. He took up the responsibility for his mother after his parents' separation.

3. Even though his mother never really cared about him, he continued providing for her his entire life.

4. He was the brains and backbone of Desilu productions, and I Love Lucy.

5. No matter how busy at work he was, he found time to play with his children.

6. He continued loving Lucille in his special way even after realizing (or thinking) that his wife loved her work more than she loved him.

7. In spite of being discriminated by Hollywood and television heads and producers for being 'Cuban', he stayed resilient and proved them wrong by staying by Lucille and thereby creating television's best sitcom.

9. Even though he was ridiculed and bullied in his army days as being 'Mr Ball', he did the injured men good by bringing entertainment and improving their welfare.

10. He was the only person in the world who knew how to make Lucille 'Lucy'.

11. He could remember the entire I Love Lucy script just after one reading, and he even gave excellent suggestions to improve it!
12. Despite his womanizing ways, he made it clear that he wanted no one but Lucille to father his children. 
13. He continued sending Lucille her favorite red and white carnations, as well as jewelry after their divorce, on special occasions like wedding anniversaries, her birthdays, their children's birthdays and even Mother's Day!

Even though the world recognized your talents and contributions posthumously, you'll always be remembered, not just as Ricky Ricardo, but in spite of being Ricky Ricardo. You'll always be Desi Arnaz, one of the most intelligent man who created Desilu Inc. and loved Lucille Ball.

Lucy Goes to Scotland

Studio audience who viewed Lucy Goes to Scotland got a real treat. Normally, the I Love Lucy sets were made up of neutral colors because they'd look better on black and white film, but Desilu Inc. decided to make an exception for this episode for publicity purposes.

Desi even brought his own video camera to record the color version. Too bad we don't get to see it. I really hope that the Arnaz family could release the color version because till this day, there's only one true color segment of I Love Lucy on earth, filmed secretly by a studio audience member.

CBS has painstakingly colorized this episode, though! They made use of the picture above can colored as accurately as they could on Ricky and Lucy Ricardo's Scottish costumes.

You can imagine how romantic and exciting the earlier years of their marriage had been. They fought like mad, and made love like crazy. They loved playing games to test each other's devotion and depth of love.

I suppose that spending too much time together was one of the reasons Desi and Lucille ultimately filed for divorce. Their marriage got routine, and their responsibilities accumulated a great deal. They spent the day working on I Love Lucy, publicity tours, etc., and the night together too. Even the closest couple need a break from each other.

That's why after the divorce, they finally realized they were each other's greatest loves. They had that break, but it was eternal.

The Arnaz Family

I know there are many negative opinions on Desi and especially Lucille that are circulating.In my opinion, given the astounding workload, amounted with the broken childhood, Lucille was the best mother she could ever be. And Desi certainly did spend quality time with his kids even though he was busy with his movie studio and the roles.

I see pictures of Lucille playing with her kids in snow or in the swimming pool, Desi and Lucille having their kids visit the I Love Lucy set, Desi and Lucille holding parties for the kids and taking the kids along on their publicity tours, the Arnaz family touring Hawaii, New York and other states and Europe, celebrating many important occasions together, etc.. And I read interviews where Lucie Arnaz said her mum was always there in the morning to say goodbye when she went to school, and there at the dinner table at night.

Tell me, after reading this, do you still think they were bad parents? Come on, they were the famous Ricky and Lucy Ricardo, how much personal time on their hands do you think they had?

The Ricardos and the Mertzes

The success of I Love Lucy is due to its fundamental principle of love, that love conquers all, that a happy ending ensues. Aren't these what human beings subconsciously aim for? The purpose of living life the way we do is to hope that a happy ending occurs.

No matter how zany Lucy Ricardo's antics are, her husband, Ricky, always forgives her. Her neighbors and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz always support her. And it so happens that Ricky's best friend happens to his neighbor, and Lucy's best friend happens to be her neighbor, and they're all paired up.

As long as they are honest people who work hard, it'll entail a good life, good enough to travel to Hollywood and Europe as a foursome.

It's America's dream: the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

I Love Lucy is a global treasure, really.

I Love Lucy: The Ballet

One of the classic episodes!

Mary Wickes, the woman who played Madame LeMond in The Ballet, was one of Lucille Ball's closest friends, and also one of the very few people who could really make her laugh (In the 1970s, Lucille wrote a list of the people who could make her laugh on her organizer and Mary Wickes made the list!).

Mary was considered the role of Ethel Mertz, but Mary knew Lucille's character and her working style too well to agree. She believed that if she accepted the role, it would ruin their friendship. She played Madame LeMond really well, didn't she!

Mary also accompanied Lucille on her final visit to Vivian Vance before her death in 1979. While Lucille and Viv chatted, Mary gave them some private time by sitting at a corner. When they drove home from Viv's place, they cried hysterically because it was obvious to them that they would never see Viv alive again. Viv lost her life to cancer thereatfer.

Desi took countless pictures and videos of Lucille throughout their marriage. He believed that that was what a loving husband should do: take evidences of his beautiful wife. As a result, they had a whole shelf of home videos and dozens of photo albums. After divorce and throughout her life, Lucille would often go down memory lane and view these media products.

Desi displayed some onscreen comedic talent with his "Please keep jiggling, Peggy, keep jiggling!"

"I was terribly intimidated working with Lucille Ball because, well, she was Lucy, but she was marvelously professional. In rehearsals she was letter perfect, but I was shocked during the shoot. When the camera started rolling in front of the live audience, she just "turned on" -- she was so much bigger on camera than in rehearsal. I got the part because Madelyn called me and asked me if I would like to be on I Love Lucy. I was thrilled to do it, but there was only one problem. I was pregnant. I was playing a teenager on radio on Corliss Archer at the time and didn't show too much, so we thought it was safe. Wardrobe covered me up so I didn't show at all. Lucy knew I was pregnant, and when we rehearsed the "keep jigging Peggy" scene, she would say, "Janet, cool it. Don't do it too much now. You don't want to miscarry!""
